I'm in Costa Rica!
I’ve been spending a month traveling and working Costa Rica. Back in November, I got a Facebook ad from Selina pitching their Colive program and immediately my mind started dreaming… After some blessings from family and working out logistics, I made a plan. I found a friend to stay in my apartment. My family volunteered to take care of Grady. I paused a lot of subscriptions. I packed WAY too much. On January 15, I flew to San Jose and began a new adventure.
It’s been absolutely wonderful. The company of hostels, I’m staying at has provided very efficient coworking spaces and really just been incredibly helpful the whole time. For a set price, I’ve been able to travel to 3 locations over a month with access to coworking space, discounts on site and a free wellness class (yoga, yes please) every day. I spent 10 days on the coast in Jaco, a pretty Americanized town but it was a great place to start and the hotel was right on the beach. I surfed for the first time and did pretty well!
On the 24th I took a ferry over to Santa Teresa on the southern part of the Guanacaste peninsula. Santa Teresa was one of the most peaceful, idyllic places I’ve ever visited. I feel so fortunate I had 10 days there. Overall, I saw 20 nights of sunsets after ending work at 4 or 4:30. It was just so special.
On the 4th, I left the coast and traveled north to La Fortuna, near the Arenal volcano. I worked Friday and spent the weekend hiking trails and waterfalls and visiting some hot springs. The volcano was hidden behind the clouds but is finally out this morning!
I’ve met so many wonderful people: Europeans, Canadians, Americans, Costa Ricans. Traveling alone has had a few frustrating moments but it’s been really nice to meet new people after a year of such regularity. Most places are obviously operating at a reduced capacity, and masks are worn indoors and in cars, etc. The tourism industry is obviously suffering here, and they’re incredibly accommodating to the visitors here. It’s also been really nice to hear the positive words about Delta whenever I tell someone I work for the company. People have nothing but praise about how Delta has handled the last year and, of course, they ask if I can get them SkyMiles. 😊
In the weeks to come when I’m back home, I’ll write more detailed posts and videos about the time here. For now, I’m journaling and trying to be present in the moment. I’m aware of the privilege it it to step away from ‘life’ right now and seize this opportunity, but it’s been a lot easier than I expected. My days feel so peaceful and exciting. I fly home in six days and I’m certainly excited to be home for a bit. Though I can’t shake the feeling that while the world is paused to normalcy, I should take advantage of the freedom.
